How Does Skin Needling Work?

For a lot of people with aging skin hearing the words ‘skin needling’ often peaks their interest. But the first question is always how does skin needling work? Skin Needling has been scientifically proven to improve skin health aids in a number of skin conditions. The treatment can soften wrinkles, fill in lines, improve skin texture and tone, reduce scars and acne scars, stretch marks and improve chicken pox scars. It is a great treatment to promote collagen production which aids in the repair of many skin problems.

What is Skin Needling?

Skin Needling is a procedure that uses fine surgical stainless steel needles to pierce the skin. It is also referred to as dermal needling or collagen induction therapy (Percutaneous Therapy Induction of Collagen). The piercing of the skin creates micro areas of inflammation or microtrauma within the skin that then stimulate the production of new cells. These new cells repair via the skin’s normal repair mechanism to improve pigmentation, increase collagen, reduce texture, and enhance the tone.

The MDerma revitalises damaged skin by using these mechanisms as part of the natural healing process. When creating these microtraumas the body responds with a physiological process that improves the thickness, colour, texture and consistency. Visible results after the first treatment can include skin tightening, reduction of keloid scars and surgical scars, reduced acne scarring, wrinkles, stretch marks and more.

The mechanism by which results are achieved is similar to that of fractional laser technology but without the associated side effects. The MDerma causes less trauma over dermal rollers and has minimal epidermal damage. The use of disposable cartridge heads also eliminate cross-contamination.

How Does Skin Needling Work?

Skin Needling works by creating micro punctures in the epidermis. These small punctures are referred to as microtrauma and are the key to the treatment’s success. The microtrauma caused from the needling stimulates an immune response through inflammation to repair the damaged tissue and outer skin layer.

The treatment is adjusted and tailored to suit each individual and the needle depth varies depending on the area of skin being treated. Scar tissue, stretch marks, character lines and fine lines require a deeper depth of penetration to target the reticular dermis or to break up any fibrous tissue. We generally dermal stamp these areas first before going over the entire area deeper to gain maximum results and even coverage.

The treatment stimulates a mass amount of fibroblast cells which produce collagen and elastin. The collagen at the start of your treatment is a type-3 collagen which is an unstable form. At 6 weeks post-treatment, that same collagen becomes a type-1 collagen, which is a permanent collagen structure in your skin. This is what gives long-lasting rejuvenating results.

What can I expect from Skin Needling?

Immediately after your procedure, the treated area will be covered in a film of blood, gel and edema. This can often look very confronting and you may choose not to look if you do not wish. We will remove this and immediately apply various serums and massage them into the skin to help the healing process. The treatment allows active serums to be absorbed more readily so this is an important step in the procedure. We will then apply a tinted mineral sunscreen to reduce the appearance of redness.

You may find the skin will be slightly swollen for the first 24 hours, and some bruising can also appear (which is actually beneficial). Your skin will be sensitive to touch for approximately 48 hours but it will begin to return to a more tolerable level, and redness will subside. It will feel tight and dry, and like a bad sunburn. After 5-6 days you may begin to peel, especially around the mouth and active facial regions. It’s important not to pick. After 7 days you can then come back in for a microdermabrasion to help remove any extra dry skin.
